Custom made bookcases are generally divided into two classes: built-ins, and modified standard bookcases. However, there’s another class as well: The Dept. 87 Wall System
. Our design, I feel, is a nice way to combine style, functionality and adaptability when considering custom library bookcases.
If you’re considering a built-in custom bookcase, you might want to keep these points in mind: while built-ins made by a master craftsman deliver a high-end, professional look, and can fit any space, the built-in bookcases have to stay with the house if you move, and you cannot find replacement parts, as there is no standardization of parts used by contractors. Our Dept. 87 Wall System is easily installed, adjustable, and expandable — it can change to fit the inevitable changes in your lifestyle. For example, it can be used as a bookcase now in your teenager’s room, but it could be an entertainment center in the man cave after the teen goes off to college. So as your family changes, the Dept. 87 Wall System can too. And if you move, you can just pack it up and take it with you.
That’s because the Dept. 87 Wall System has an adjustable mounting system, and I made sure that it was easy to set up the sturdy wooden posts of the Dept. 87 Wall System’s different elements — with shelves available in widths of 8”, 10”, 12”, 14” and 16”— in closets, in hallways, or along walls of varying sizes and shapes.
When considering the modified standard bookcases available from the big factory-built suppliers, you might point out the advantages of easily replaceable parts and lower costs. But because they’re built in factories, the quality of workmanship is not quote up to par, and they never quite fit into unique spaces, so the use of the necessary spacer blocks and fillers really kills that high-end look you want.
We originally created the Dept. 87 brand as a way for the public to easily differentiate between factory pieces, and the durable, adaptable and stylish pieces myself and my team of American craftsmen are designing and building right here in America, with American lumber.
Durability is why we employ or contract only skilled woodworkers. Adaptability is why we put so much thought into our unique mounting system: it easily deals with irregular walls, common obstacles like radiators and pipes, and you can move it from room to room, or even house to house as your needs change. And style is why we never stray far from the spirit of Vintage Industrial American Furniture when we design and offer new pieces. All of the above is what you want in a custom bookcase, and exactly what you’ll get with the Dept. 87 Wall System.

might be the right fit for you.
